Historical Society Plans Great Maple Fest Experience

For the 22nd consecutive year, Hebron Historical Society will be welcoming visitors to their annual Quilt Show, with over a hundred quilts displayed at Old Town Hall, located adjacent to the Douglas Library right in the center of Hebron.

Nathalie Peltier-Horton is again hosting the show. If you have a quilt you’d like to display, please contact Peltier-Horton at 860-645-8421.

“This is a Quilt Show that is very unique every year due to Nathalie’s creativity,” said Maple Fest Coordinator Annie Piggott. “She collects different quilts of all styles and colors, and artistically displays them in a manner that makes each show unique.” Visitors are allowed to photograph (but not touch) the quilts, so remember to bring your cameras!

The demonstrations are scheduled for both Saturday and Sunday. Other local quilters will be on hand to answer questions about fabrics, styles and methods.

annie_and_teacup_auctionThe Society’s dazzling variety of “teacup auction” items will also be available. These baskets and auction items feature things that appeal to all ages, including hand-made crafts, kids’ baskets, and food baskets. As always, tickets for the teacup auction items are still only 50 cents apiece, or 3 for $1.00. Winning tickets will be drawn Sunday at 3:00 p.m.; you do not need to be present to win. Winners will be called and can pick up their winning items at the Douglas Library.

john_and_barbara_soderbergpaula_billard_maple_fest_2010Maple Milk will be available in the front of Old Town Hall. This is a delicious concoction of milk, syrup and “secret ingredients.” Tastes like a milk shake, only better! Ned Ellis and Farmers Cow have donated the fresh whole milk. Maple flavored baked goods, made by Barbara Soderberg and her team of local volunteers, will also be sold, but come quickly. Last year, all of the baked goods (meant to last the full two days of Maple Fest) sold out by 2:00 on Saturday!

nate_and_parker_maple_fest_2010For a great learning adventure, Parker Aubin and Nate Baribault will again have their live animal exhibit featuring the Baribault goats and the Aubin chickens at the Old Town Pound, located at the intersection of Chestnut Hill Road and Route 66, just west of the center of town. This popular attraction drew almost 160 visitors last year.

carolyn_at_gullThe Gull School House, located on Marjorie Circle and adjacent to the Town Office Building parking lot, will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with tours hosted by Carolyn Aubin. The Gull is owned by the Town of Hebron and managed by the Society.

lebanon_militia_reenactmentAdjacent to the Gull School House will be a live Revolutionary War encampment sponsored by the Lebanon Militia and the Lebanon Militia. Here, you will see musket drills and demonstrations; spinning demonstrations; basket weaving; midwifery skills and tools; and 18th century surgeon re-enactment; and various and crafts of the time period of the 18th century. Women embroiderers from the Lebanon Militia will be located at Old Town Hall.

The Lebanon Militia, re-enacting the original 6th Company, 3rd Connecticut regiment, defended the Town of Lebanon against English tyranny. They wore no standard uniforms, only a mix and match of civilian clothing with possibly a hint of military clothing dating from the French and Indian Wars. Each man was responsible to provide his own clothing and equipment. A total of 677 men, slightly more than half the male population of Lebanon in 1775, actually served in one of the town militias of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. Men from Lebanon, Connecticut were in every major battle fought in the North. For more information about this exciting group, go to http://www.lebanonmilitia.com. This re-enactment is not to be missed!

The Burrows Hill School House, the oldest school house in town, located on Burrows Hill Road, will be open from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Tours will be conducted by Joan D’Auria. Don’t miss it on your way out of town.
